In the heroicomic Maid of Orleans, Voltaire attacks the alliance of monarchical and Catholic power in fomenting nationalism and superstition. Stefano Jacini, the librettist, absorbs its satirical intent and recounts it through a Joan of Arc more than rebellious and against authority. Composer Fabio Vacchi chooses a narrative, playful and desecrating style. A work to amuse and to think about, culminating not with the burning of the girl, but with her escape on a donkey: a nobly literary animal, irresistible for its primordial erotic energy.
