Lo sposo di tre e marito di nessuna is the only opera buffa than Luigi Cherubini wrote for Venice. The playful drama in two acts to the libretto by Filippo Livigni made its successful debut at the San Samuele Theatre in November 1783. At the time little over the age of twenty, he took on a genre that was completely new for him, creating an entertaining opera in line with the tradition of the Neapolitan school, full of musical verve and brio. The action is driven by a classic mix of deception, misunderstandings, pranks and disguises between characters that seem to have come straight from a Commedia dell’Arte plot: the Baronesses Donna Lisetta and Donna Rosa, the Captain Don Martino, Don Pistacchio Baron of Lago Secco, his uncle Don Simone, and the commoners Bettina and Folletto. The story revolves around the unsuccessful marriage of Don Pistacchio, betrothed to Donna Rosa, who - tricked by Don Martino, the brother of Lisetta, courts both Donna Lisetta and the commoner Bettina, to then regret his actions and retreat. But as an old saying goes, “those who want too much end up with nothing”, and Don Pistacchio, who courts no fewer than three women, fails with all of them.
