In occasion of the 50th anniversary of Maestro Muti's debut in Florence.
"The words of Shakespeare and the music of Giuseppe Verdi make me grateful to these two geniuses of art. Macbeth contains, above all, the joy of the throne, the sceptre. This we see in the double image of Lady Macbeth and her husband. But, with the following detail: in Verdi’s opera everything is in the hands, and the intentions, of the Lady, who controls Macbeth. All Verdi needs is a small, but great, musical arch to describe Macbeth and Banco. He does so in a circular manner, just a few lines are needed to demonstrate the elegance of the progression of the notes, as though they were part of a circle. It is no coincidence that this type of musical structure has been used. Over the years I have staged many editions of Macbeth, and every time I return to this opera, I realize that one never finishes digging into its characters”. Riccardo Muti (A.G.- La Repubblica)
