When Giuseppe Verdi met Bartolomeo Merelli, an impresario at the Teatro alla Scala, he had no intention of composing a new opera: he was devastated by the death of his sons and wife and was convinced that he was a terrible musician due to the fiasco of his second opera, Un giorno di regno. Merelli manages to slip the libretto for a new opera, the Nabuccodonosor, which had been refused by Carl Otto Nicolai, into the pocket of his topcoat. On arriving home, Verdi threw away the libretto in rage, meaning to destroy it, but when it fell open on "Va' pensiero", it was the inspiration that he was looking for.
